Biological diversity or biodiversity has become a popular term for the many variations among life forms on this planet. The word biodiversity can be used as a form of measuring the health of earth’s biological systems and species. How does the term biodiversity connect with the coral reefs on our planet? And how do pollution, global warming, and conservation efforts affect them?

Biodiversity
The term biodiversity can be interpreted in several ways but is generally used as a replacement for species diversity or genetic diversity. The terminology describes variations of life and its various forms in an ecosystem or biome, which includes the entire planet. Earth is made up of thousands of different ecosystems and each is generally self sustaining. The coral reefs are an excellent example of a perfectly balanced ecosystem within itself as long as the system remains in balance.

Upsetting a natural balance
When the sea is polluted or the water temperature rises above the norm, there is a chance the ecosystem will become threatened and then we see that finely balanced biodiversity becoming unstable and there may be loss of that ecosystem as we know it. There are barriers separating ecosystems and these may be in the form of mountains, oceans, rivers, and other barriers that prevent crossover from one particular environment into another.
Australia is an excellent example of a large land mass ecosystem. There can be found a wide variety of animal and plant life that is only found on that continent, and never found anywhere else. That is until human interference comes into play. The mammals and birds would never be able to travel to other continents unless man takes them there.

Ecosystems imbalanced
There have been examples of fish being introduced into an environment unfamiliar to them and we find those alien fish totally take over their new environment and drive off or kill off the fish native to that waterway. The invasive species may well be capable of living in a far wider range of ecosystems but they are upsetting the balance and potentially becoming pests rather than useful additions to that environment.
Whenever new or exotic species are introduced into a ecosystem that they did not originate in by human intervention, the entire balance of that ecologic system is put at risk.

Pollution and our coral reefs
Biodiversity is what happens when the balance of nature is disrupted. Pollution of our oceans and seas has created an upset in that fine balance that can have long reaching affects on many ecosystems. Life forms that have been untouched and pristine for millions of years become unstable and unable to maintain their perfect balance.
The beautiful coral reefs have been called the rainforests of the sea. Most coral reefs on planet earth have been formed after the most recent glacial period, making them less than ten thousand years old. This means they are relatively young when compared to many living things on this planet. Many of them grow along the continental shelving created when sea levels rose during ice melts following the glacial movements. Most require light in order to thrive and grow as these reefs are living things, although some coral reefs can be found in deep seas and away from continental shelves.

Let’s save the planet before it’s too late. Coral reefs are amazingly beautiful and diverse, displaying a wide range of colors. When the oceans become polluted by human garbage and oil spills, or the waters warm due to the current global warming, these finely balanced ecosystems can die due to the changes in their environment. We must somehow prevent this from happening.

Now that ‘Cash for Clunkers’ is over, you must be wondering what to do with that older vehicle which you are trying to get rid of. You could sell it off at a not-so-great price to the junkyard that would strip away the working parts of your car and throw the rest away. This poses a great environmental hazard, since the unusable parts are now just going to sit in the junkyard and contribute to the already growing problems of excess waste. Waste can attract several different rodents, insects and when burned can even lead to creation of carcinogens.

Another alternative for your older vehicle is to donate it to your favorite charity. Car donation is a great way to help out your favorite charity while helping the environment at the same time. Since the car will now be donated, the charity will most likely resell your vehicle and this way your older car does not have to end its life. Donating it will not only help the charity but also the environment since fewer vehicles will be in the junkyard and fewer parts will be left to degrade.

Car donation is a great idea in this economy, since you can help charities without breaking your wallet. You can just donate your older vehicle and this way the charity does not suffer in this economic downturn and you get good karma for donating! Another benefit of donating your vehicle to charity is that you get tax benefits. A car donation tax deduction will generally be up to the book value of your car.

Most of the charities today accept vehicles as donations. They normally either keep the car and use it within the organization or may resell it with the proceeds going back to the charity. Another great thing is that you do not even need to get your car towed to the charity; they will normally cover the towing charge and take the vehicle from your place. So what are you waiting for? Donate now to help your charity and the environment.

Our children are among the most precious things to us, and it makes sense for us to want to look after them. Yet is there really any benefit to be had from ensuring that their clothing is organically produced? Well, absolutely!

The Problems of Non-Organic Cotton

Your baby’s skin is the most sensitive it will ever be, so it makes sense not to bring it into contact with anything remotely harmful. You’ll probably have chosen cotton rather than man made fibres for precisely that reason. Even so, it’s hard to avoid all unhealthy substances with non-organically produced cotton, given that growing it uses somewhere in the region of 25% of the world’s pesticides, many of which are carcinogenic. Even processing it involves a number of chemical processes, and while most companies will take every care to ensure that nothing gets through to the end product, can you really be certain that it won’t, when allergies and related complaints have risen steadily in industrialized nations?

It’s Good for Your Baby, and the Environment

Using organic baby clothes clothes made from cotton that has never been subjected to pesticides or insecticides isn’t just good for his health but it is also better for the environment. These days, we’re all trying to reduce our carbon footprint, but what about damage to the environment done in other ways? Pollution to water sources and the destruction of biodiversity by industrial farming are both issues with potentially serious consequences. Choosing organic options for your baby’s clothes is a way to protect not just them, but also the world that they are going to grow up in.

It’s Good for Farm Workers

If you’re worried about the possible effects of the substances used in non-organic farming on your child, imagine how much worse any effects are for people who work with those substances every day. By purchasing baby clothes that are not produced with extensive use of chemicals, we can increase the chances of these workers being able to operate in an environment that won’t kill them later on.

It’s Not More Expensive

Inevitably, talk of organic products turns to how much more expensive they are, but that isn’t true of clothing to the same extent. Stuff for daily use such as baby hats and gloves are not significantly more expensive than non-organic ones, and might actually be cheaper in the long run, since organically produced cotton tends to be more robust and harder wearing. Not having to buy an extra set of clothes for your child can quickly repay your initial outlay.

So there you have it. Organic baby clothes are better for the environment, better for the people who produce them, and better for your wallet. Most importantly, they might well be better for your child, and that has to be the deciding factor.

The retail and consumer goods industry is currently focusing on green and sustainable practices due to the fierce competition in the industry, intensive resource use and the penurious state of labor in some regions. In this article, we discuss how the retail sector can imbibe sustainable and green business model and also take a look at some of the efforts already taken in this direction.

A recent survey suggested that about 70 percent of American consumer factor in the environment impact of any products or services before purchasing. Hence companies are trying their best to serve consumer concern by increased focus on improving energy efficiency, reducing waste, recycling waste and raising awareness about environmental concerns.

Retail industry has a direct contact with the end customers and hence has a vital role to play in the current push towards green and sustainable practices by collaborating with its consumers and suppliers. The climate change which has become the most pressing problem facing the mankind can be addressed by reducing green house gas emission and using energy efficiently. Logistics optimization through supply chain management can be an important tool. A culture should be developed in the retail industry that encourages employees to identify energy saving opportunities and rewards them for implementing them.
Products like nanomaterials and genetically modified products that pose greater danger should be examined properly in all aspects including packaging. Retailers also have an opportunity to request suppliers to reduce excessive packing thereby reducing wastage and material cost. Organic food should be encouraged by the retailers and sustainably harvested sea food from well managed fisheries must only be offered for consumption.

The retail sector also has to look at the practice of outsourcing from a new perspective as sourcing from foreign markets might appear to improve competitiveness yet it has a negative environmental impact.

The consumer must be educated about the urgent need to adopt green and sustainable practices. The policy of three R’s i.e. Reduce, Reuse and Recycle can help make the industry more environments friendly. Green products like recycled paper and energy saving devices must be promotes in retail stores. The problem of plastic and paper bags – both of which are detrimental to environment can be avoided by promoting bags made of natural fabrics. These bags can be used to promote the retail brand too by printing the logo of the retail company. Retail companies also can save on fuel costs using hybrid fuel efficient delivery vehicles and solar power panels for refrigeration.
In the fiercely competitive retail sector it is pleasant to see the market leader at the helm of the affairs to make the sector more green and sustainable. The retail giant Wal-Mart adopts a practice of encouraging suppliers of green products through its policy of “environmental scorecards”. The company also alongside other players like IKEA and Whole Foods has started efforts to eliminate plastic bags that are non biodegradable. The company is a pioneer in adopting solar energy to generate power for its stores.

Similarly Home Depot – the second largest general retailer in U.S. has stated on its website its commitment “to the environment and pledge to continue to be an industry leader in looking for products and services that are respectful of our world.” The company highlights its green products under it Eco Option program and these products are placed at preferred positions in stores. Its charitable arm, the Home Depot Foundation pledged in 2007 to invest $100 million for 100,000 green sustainable housing and planting 3 million trees. Further the company promotes energy efficient compact fluorescent lamps (popularly called as CFL lamps) and has even created the largest recycling program for recycling of the bulbs in the U.S.

Staples Inc. was the first nationwide retailer to offer a recycling program for electronic waste. The consumers can drop most electronic equipment at any of its stores for recycling by paying a small fee. The company has adopted environmental friendly paper and is developing green products for its brand.
Although the retail industry has taken the first step towards a sustainable business model but the industry needs to overcome huge challenges like e waste. Such an approach is crucial for the growth of the industry as the material resources of our planet are limited.

The last few years have seen much introspection by players in the financial sector – namely the banking sector and Investors. The effects of global warming and steady deterioration of the environment as a result of human activity is no longer hidden from anyone – the effects can be felt daily. Climate change and the fear of exhaustion of non-renewable resources have led to great changes in public opinion on various issues affecting the environment. As a result, the financial sector has been forced to sit up and take notice of the kind of projects and industries they fund. It is now common for financial analysts and decision makers to factor in the risks related to environmental impact while making decisions related to investing in projects.

In addition to environmental impact, it is increasingly common to take social impact of projects into account while investing. Institutions have been moving away from funding industries that have significant environmental impact. The thrust now is on investing in companies that are innovating in production of clean energy and in sustainable production of goods. Consumer awareness and resulting legislation has caused many banks and venture capitalists to take a second look at the avenues of investment available. In fact, while investment in traditional areas has stagnated and even reduced due to the economic recession, companies involved in clean technology have seen an increase in funding available.

This is a direct result of the frameworks that the financial sector is basing its investment decisions on – the Equator Principles and the Principles of Responsible Investment, both of which provide some guidelines on assessing the sustainability of the projects to be funded.

It is not large institutions alone who can make a difference – the small investor too can do his bit for protecting the environment by investing in green bonds being floated – green bonds invest exclusively in companies that produce environmentally friendly products manufactured using sustainable practices and fair labor policies. There has been much investor interest lately in Renewable Energy Exchange Traded Funds (ETF). There has been a total paradigm shift in investment, both by institutional investors and individuals.

Many politicians and environmental activists loosely throw around the term, “global warming” to indicate the recent discoveries of a changing pattern in climate. They cite instances of years with exceptionally high temperatures as well as an overall warmer temperature. While this is generally a well-accepted assertion, many climatologists will claim that we are going through a global cool down. The evidence for this includes record snowfall and very low temperatures. While there is no definitive answer as to which side is correct, it is important to continue to research the climate cycles to make an informed decision.

Global cooling was a term first coined in the 1970s and is the belief that there is an increased establishment and growth of glaciers. Scientists believed that since the 1940s, the earth was gradually cooling. They thought that the increase use of fossil fuels resulted in the release of particles into the air that would filter the sunlight, causing a global cooling effect. It was the belief that global cooling was brought on by global dimming, meaning the increase in particle count of the atmosphere due to human interference. In order to support their case, scientists showed a decrease in temperature over the decades.

In contrast, global warming is a term known for the trend of overall warming of the earth. Proponents of global warming believe that instead of leading to a perpetual cool down, the use of fossil fuels is leading to a warming that can most distinctively be measured by the oceans. Scientists studying global warming have claimed there to be an overall increase in Earth’s temperature by .56°Celcius during a 100 year timespan, the most aggressive increasing occurring during the most recent five decades.

The anticipated effects of global warming are alarming and indicate a destruction of the species and habitats on Earth, affecting even the habitat of humans. The destruction of crops, weather extremes, and disease are feared with many scientists believing the Earth will no longer be livable by the human species.

Scientists who believe global warming is the cause for our climate change dismiss global cooling as a pseudo science. While there may be years when cities experience particularly harsh or cold winters, they refute the notion that it is a repeating trend and instead claim it to be isolated incidents. After all, it is important to keep in mind that climate change is not measured by seasons and does not include soaring highs and lows but a gradual and stead increase or decrease in temperature. When studying this change over the last several decades, the temperature has seen a steady, while not amounting to even a full degree, the implications of such change is grand and according to many scientists, enough to negate the entire global cooling theory.

The debate over global cooling and warming is sure to continue as scientists make claims and ne findings to support each side. The climate has never been considered stable, over the years Earth has undergone both global warming and cooling and the transitions in between. Understanding these patterns is essential to understanding the situation we are currently dealing with.

Scientists generate an understanding of the Earth’s climate pattern through the study prehistoric ice remnants and ocean sediment core to gain an accurate history of climate patterns. They will drill very large holes into the arctic ice, which once began as snowflake. As the snow piled and turned into ice, gas bubbles became trapped, allowing scientists to recreate the history of the climate up to 450,000+ years ago. A similar process occurs in the ocean sediment cores that trap gases allowing scientists to accurately pinpoint climate history of long ago and to accurately discover where we are today.

While climate change is an inevitable pattern of the Earth, it is undeniably being expedited by the impact of the human race. Whether you fall on the global warming or global cooling side of the debate, the common factor is that the overuse of fossil fuels is creating a negative impact on the Earth. Without the proper intervention, the climate of the Earth will continue to change much more rapidly than it biologically should, resulting in the change of life as we currently understand it.

Waste management and handling of waste materials has seen some dramatic changes over the past few decades. In years gone by we were all dependent on landfills for disposal of most waste materials, including garbage, discarded furniture and appliances, and even hazardous materials such as batteries and items that contained mercury. The planet definitely needed some sort of waste management system in order to remain healthy. Before it is too late we all must learn to:

Reduce the amount of waste materials we need to dispose of
Recycle as much as we can as often as possible
Reuse as much as we possibly can
Recover as much as possible from waste by making it a source of energy

Incineration

Incineration can remove waste and create an energy source at the same time. Burning waste materials converts waste into flue gases, particulates, incinerator bottom ash, and heat. This heat source can be used in turn as a generator of electric power. Flue gases and particulates are filtered free from pollutants before dispersed into the atmosphere. This form of waste to energy technology is “a win win” situation.
While incinerators are found to reduce the amount of original waste by eighty to eighty five percent, compared to compression (in garbage trucks) which is ninety five to ninety six percent, there is less overall to dispose of because it has been burned up and not merely compressed. Ultimately incineration reduces the volume of waste that would otherwise go into the landfill by some seventy percent.

Landfill

Waste disposal into a landfill (dump) entails burying the waste materials and this is still commonly practiced throughout the world. Many landfills were set up in previously unused or abandoned mines, quarries, or pits that had already been dug. When properly managed, a landfill can be an inexpensive and hygienic means of the disposal of waste materials. The majority of the materials buried will eventually break down into gases and dissipate into the atmosphere. Some gases may be pumped from landfills and burned in gas engines, creating electricity. This is cause for concern now days however; as there is concern the gases create greenhouse gas.

Recycling

For the past several decades recycling has come into vogue and is proving to be quite effective when practiced. The idea is to reuse as many items as possible either in their original form or transforming them into something equally useful. Paper products are a popular item to recycle and have proven a most effective means of preserving trees. Plastics and glass are effectively recycled, saving space at the local landfills. Oil used for cooking and frying can be used for a fuel source in many vehicles.

Waste Avoidance

Preventing waste materials from being created in abundance is important as a form of waste management. Reuse of second hand items, repairing instead of replacing with new, manufacturing longer lasting products (cotton bags instead of plastic bags for groceries, etc.), designing items that use less material (smaller, thinner). Less wastage created in food and food handling materials. All can be utilized to achieve less waste of many materials.

Composting (anaerobic digestion)

Many materials such as plant, food scraps, and various paper products can successfully be recycled or even eliminated through composting. An effective compost heap in ones back yard can be turned into mulch and feed for plants and grasses. This biological form of waste management can even be useful as an energy source when the gases (methane) are processed and used to generate electricity. Composting speeds up the process of decomposition of the organic matter.

Eco-friendly landscaping is defined as lawn and gardening practices that are free of chemicals, utilizes plants and flowers native to the area and accustomed to the climate and soil conditions, requires very little watering, and slows down storm water run-off. The practice of eco-friendly landscaping takes the natural habitat of an area into consideration, including plants or animals not commonly seen. These factors help to contribute to the well-being of our ecosystem and maintain a vast number of benefits for everyone.

Once you adopt an eco-friendly landscaping practice, you will find you open the door to a wide range of benefits. These benefits include those toward wildlife, health, personal satisfaction, and even monetary advantages. It is an appropriate practice for everyone, including public areas, highways, commercial us, and private residential homes. The benefits are greater when whole communities implement eco-friendly landscaping, but individual adoption can be highly rewarding as well. Above all else, natural landscaping practices lessen your carbon footprint ensuring that you are doing your part to restore the environment and promote a healthy earth.

Placing plants strategically around a building and throughout the yard can increase heat efficiency. This results in greater insulation of the building, providing a smaller reliance on air conditioning and heating which in turn can save a great deal of money in energy bills. In addition, trees can be planted to act as a barrier against winds, further reducing energy use.

Another benefit to eco-friendly landscaping comes when using native plants and researching their needs. By partaking in this simple practice, you can place plants where they will thrive without much effort. This will give you a beautiful design with minimal commitment. You can also conserve water by creating a natural irrigation system using water barrels and rain containers. This prevents excess water run-off and provides water for later times. In addition to the benefit of conserving water, this will also conserve funds and effort!

Using eco-friendly pesticides and fertilizers is one of the most important things for going green in your landscaping and has great implications. The benefits of this practice are great and include healthier lives for all. Many times, pesticides indirectly harm many species in the area that have consumed insects subject to the toxic chemicals. Benefits of non-toxic pesticides and fertilizers also include an increase in your personal health. Pesticides and fertilizers are often the leading cause of many diseases and can even be linked to serious ailments such as cancer. Eliminating these toxins will decrease your risk for illness.

Other benefits of eco-friendly landscaping include quieter living areas due to the reduction of power equipment, less likelihood of flooding due to storm-water management, more chances to appreciate and enjoy nature, cleaner water sources for drinking, swimming, and fishing, smaller strain for waste collection and water treatments, less time in landscaping management, and a reduction of landscaping costs. These benefits come in addition to less energy use, lower energy bill cost, less health concerns, and thriving wildlife. By partaking in eco-friendly landscaping, you will be doing your part to preserve your community while adding to the biodiversity of our ecosystem as a whole.

The earliest environmental law in the United States dates back to 1899. The Rivers and Harbors Act determined it was a misdemeanor to dump or unload an refuse into U.S. waters that were navigable without a permit. It further stated that it was also a misdemeanor to fill, excavate, or change the course of, or capacity of any harbor, channel, or port without a permit. An act, previously passed by congress in 1882, bore the same name but was vetoed by President Arthur. All of these laws and regulations are under the administration of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.

It wasn’t until the 1960’s that the Federal Government started to actively enforce the Rivers and Harbors Act in any serious fashion, primarily due to the fact that both the public and government became increasingly concerned about our countries polluted waters. Huge oil refineries severely polluted many lakes, rivers, and streams by dumping their waste.

Soon other environmental laws came into being. In 1918 the Migratory bird and species act was enacted. This was due to an agreement made between the U.S. and Canada in 1916 regarding protection of migratory birds.

Environmental acts soon to follow included the Clean Water Act, the Clean Air Act, the Safe Drinking Water Act, the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act, the Federal Insecticide, Fungicide, and Rodenticide Act or FIFRA, and the National Environmental Policy Act. The Rivers and Harbors Act of 1899, the first statutory environmental law, was mostly replaced by the later Clean Water Act. There are a lot more environmental laws enforced in the United States, some at the state level and others federally controlled.

Rachel Carson published a book called Silent Spring in 1962 and she has been credited with the launch of the environmental movement of the U.S. ever since. Her book laid out, in documentary form, what the effects of DDT and other pesticides had on our waters and birds.

A law suit decided in 1965 is recognized as most likely being the earliest of the environmental cases involved the Scenic Hudson Preservation Conference vs the Federal Power Commission. In this law suit the Second Circuit Court of Appeals determined damage was being done by a power plant. This caused the construction of a power plant to be halted on Storm King Mountain in the state of New York. Another example, the Scenic Hudson case, also gave inspiration to passage of a National Environmental Policy Act out of which grew the Natural Resources Defense Council.

The regulation of activities causing environmental impact is under the control of the environmental policy of the United States. Their goal is protecting the environment for future generations yet to come, all the while interfering as little as necessary. The policy is a result of the environmental movement in the U.S. back in the 1960’s and 1970’s. This is the time period in which many environmentally related laws passed. These policies were intended to regulate water and air pollution and resulted in the formation of the Environmental Protection Agency or the EPA as it is commonly referred to. There are two major tools used to protect the environment and those are inducements and rules. The U.S. makes use of rules through regulation and those regulations come as a result of performance standards. These performance standards spell out the emission levels allowable, then leave the decisions as to how they will be met up to the parties which are covered by these rules

Political conservatives and business interests have fought to limit the funds while slowing the efforts to protect the environment because it was costly to them. Big Business and Big Brother do not like to be regulated by the U.S. government.
Ever since the 1970’s, vast achievements have been reached in water and air quality, and also in controlling of hazardous waste materials.

The political “hot potato” for years now has been the global warming issue. Greenhouse gas emissions are thought to be the cause of a gradual global warming of the atmosphere around our planet. Modern concerns include fuel efficiency and regulatory emission standards.

One of the major subjects that several people are bringing up is the fact that more alternative energy sources are required to reduce the impact on the earth, especially in homes and other applications such as RVs which can function as homes. The big thing is simple, solar electricity has been available for many years for homes and can be installed in various different ways for homes as well as other applications. These options are usually battery charge based and will make use of several different batteries that can be switched when one has had its charge depleted. These systems are usually available in different configurations and can be installed by professionals.

The systems can be designed to work in several different ways but solar electricity for homes is most often done in ways that can help reduce the energy consumption of any home. There are many different configurations that can be made but the main configuration will need to be designed to catch the most amount of sunlight during a day. These configurations take into account trees and many other obstacles which may reduce the amount of solar power that is collected during the light hours. This is what makes the addition of solar electricity options to RVs questionable because several RV owners will want to park their vehicles in shaded areas to reduce the amount of heat that enters the vehicle.

Solar electricity is a great concept for anyone that will want to travel a lot as solar energy can be used to power a large amount of portable electronics very easily. In the summer, solar electric air conditioning is possible as well as in the winter where space heating is possible through solar powered applications as well. It is important to look into several different options for solar electricity applications especially when traveling with a recreational vehicle. The types of solar electricity for homes make excellent options for large recreational vehicles which need a little more than the standard electricity sources that come standard.

Often times an external source such as a generator will be too loud as it consumes gasoline or kerosene and will provide electricity for a short period of time while the long lasting battery options that can be used with solar electricity to store a charge indefinitely until needed. Special technologies present in these systems allow them to be charged without causing damage to the batteries by cutting off the supply of electricity from a solar source to ensure that the batteries are in the top condition whenever possible. The electrical charge made by the sunlight may take several hours to complete and each battery may last a different length of time depending on what is being used with it and for how long.

Finding a solar electricity option for homes to be converted into useable options for your RV is simple and can be done online. The internet can provide you with several different retailers that offer different kits for home as well as possible options for an RV or other vehicle to take advantage of. Not only can you find the actual kits from trusted manufactures for affordable pricing options but you could find professional installers as well. Using professional installers will make it possible to get the home or vehicle fitted to use the solar electricity with ease and will allow for several different applications to be used when the vehicle is at full charge with solar electricity and working correctly.
